I trained four of my Sun colleagues in videoblogging, and, for practice, they filmed me talking. Some of the resulting video seemed useful, so here it is (in bite-sized pieces).

Videoblogging Tips: Getting Good Sound at a Conference
This week I trained four of my Sun colleagues in videoblogging. It was very hands-on training, with the intent that they actually produce a finished video by the end of the two-day course.
We started with setting up the cameras and mics right away, and I had them practice following an active speaker (me, imitating Jeff Bonwick’s pacing). I wasn’t really thinking about the fact that they were filming me, so I was completely unself-conscious. Which was good in some ways, not so good in others. But some of the material may be useful for videobloggers in general, so I’m editing and posting it in spite of what seems to be inordinate emphasis on my chest.
Videoblogging for Sun: By the Numbers
- 13 months: how long I’ve been shooting video for Sun
- 150 hours: video in the can (mostly shot by me personally) – and more constantly on the way
- 50 hours: video edited, compressed, and published online (not quite all by me)
- ~70 video productions: ranging from 2-minute community introductions to a 2:15 hour deep dive on MPxIO
- 140 files: of video, including multiple formats (FLV Flash for embedding in a web page, M4V to download for iPod viewing)
- 16,103 total views: of these videos (as hosted on Mediacast – some are also available in other places such as YouTube) as of Sept 10, 2008
- ~20,000 page views: to video posts on Storage Stop since the first video was posted (Oct 24, 2007). If these posts were a blog of their own, it would be #165 in Sun blog rankings for that period. (Storage Stop overall comes in at #87 for this period.)
- 1 email: all it takes to find out how you can put these videos to work for you: e.g., embed them in your blog, distribute on DVD… We want to open source our knowledge. Let’s talk about it.
Videoblogging for Sun: Numbers Update
Last September I wrote Videoblogging for Sun: By the Numbers. It’s time for an update. So here’s the situation as of today:
- 21 months: how long I’ve been shooting video for Sun
- >200 hours (I stopped counting): video in the can (mostly shot by me personally)
- ~104 hours of video edited (mostly by me) and available (some of it only internally)
- ~30 events/locations shot
- ~40,000 video views as of April, 2009
- dozens of engineers have been in front of my camera – and a few other people as well, even a couple of lawyers
- technologies & topics covered have included ZFS, open storage, community, Java, open source & the law, e-discovery, HPC, Solaris cluster, high availability, virtualization…
